Some of KLU's rewarding keesie rescues:

Dan:
Here is a picture of 8-10 week old Dan as he came to KLU in October of 2008. We had never seen such a young puppy that was so fearful of everything. He was born in a puppy mill and left to fend for himself with the big dogs. He was afraid of people, noises, sudden movements, you name it. You had to be careful picking him up as he would lose control and potty on you, he was so anxious.

Dan attended a number of puppy classes and began his agility training. Many of the obstacles were scarry at first, but he mastered them all - even the chute and the teeter.
After 8 months in foster care, Dan was adopted into a home that had several other dogs. He fits right in with them and travels with his family to the lake, camping and even agility trials. He is back in training and although he isn't the fastest dog on the course and he can only do a sequence of a few obstacles, he is out there doing it!!

I ran into Dan and his mom at a trial recently. Because he is on the small side, you just have to pick him up to give him a squeeze. He did great! Some of the other people that remembered scared little Dan in agility class came by while I was holding him and had to stop by to say 'Hi' also. They all had to ask 'Is this Dan?????' No one could believe he was the same dog that had stood quivering in the training arena just months earlier.

Lowell:

This is our foster Lowell. His name means 'little wolf' and is a name that sounds appropriate for an old man. He is probably around 12 years old. The folks at the shelter and thought he was old and fairly decrepit and thus he had a scheduled appointment with a needle. Fortunately, several local kees rescue folks saw him for the sweet soul that he is and arranged for him to be pulled from the shelter and placed in a foster home.

Here is what Lowell has to say: 'I don't hear or see very well and my back end isn't what it used to be. But I can climb the stairs to follow you and I like to play with toys and maybe even have a gentle game of tug. Foster mom says it reminds her of a young dog trapped in an old and decrepit body. I had a dental cleaning a few weeks ago and did very well with the whole process. Foster mom was worried since I also have a heart murmur.

Each day I am doing better and better. I can't remember a lot about my past life, but I am living in the moment today. Everyone is so kind and patient with me here. After all of these years, I just need some peace and quiet and love.'

Whether Lowell is adopted or not, he will live out the remainder of his life in safety and comfort. The Gidget Fund will cover any necessary expenses.

Puppies:

Four 8 month old pups just recently taken into rescue. Besides needing all of their vaccines and spays/neuter, they had to be nursed through parvo and kennel cough.
Vet bills for the four came to $1800.

Sweetie:

Sweetie had spent her life in a puppymill, producing litter and litter of puppies. She was one of the "lucky" dogs though, and got to spend time in the house with the family as a pet. Unfortunately, they did not treat their "pet" as good as you or I would.

When Sweetie came to us at an estimated age of 6 years, she had bilateral inguinal hernias that required immediate repair, severe ear infections, goopy eye, fleas and scabs all over her body, and an almost non-existent, orange-colored coat. She had grade 4 periodontal disease requiring the extraction of 11 teeth and the final blow was testing positive for heartworms. She weighed 17 pounds.

Sweetie went through one step of recovery after another and took it all in stride. She loves people and attention and snuggles up next to you for the night. She is always by your side or at your feet. You can see by the impish expression on her face, that she is feeling much better these days. She scampers through the house in excitement and barks her displeasure if her meal is taking too long. This weekend, Sweetie's new mom will pick her up and take her home, where she will truly be the cherished "pet" she deserves to be.

Jolie:

Jolie is a 9 year old keesie girl. Her owner died suddenly several years ago and a good friend took in Jolie and her keesie sister. She had had Jolie for about a year when she noticed she was having some problems. An exam and blood work revealed that Jolie had developed diabetes and was losing her vision. This was going to pose a problem as her new caretaker is on a fixed income.

KLU was contacted about taking Jolie into rescue so she could get the care she required. This was a heartbreaking proposition, but the only way – or was it? After some discussion, Jolie was placed into rescue and her caretaker became a licensed foster home. This way Jolie would be able to stay in a home she knew with her keesie sister.

Now that Jolie is a senior and eligible for Gidget Fund support, she is a “permanent foster” in her current home. The Gidget Fund pays for her insulin, syringes, blood tests, food, and her routine vaccinations. Jolie’s mom covers whatever expenses she can afford each month.

If the Gidget Fund was not available to help with Jolie’s situation, this is one of those stories that would probably have a very bad ending. At the least, her quality of life – even the length of her life – would be severely impacted. Instead, she is a happy, healthy and beautiful example of the good we can all do through our support of the Gidget Fund!!

Jewel:

This is Jewel. She is a perfect example of a commercial breeding dog’s transformation when given love, safety and good nutrition. The breeder was finished with her due to her age and health conditions.

UPDATE: In November of 2007, just two months after Jewel's story was posted on our auction, she was adopted by a very caring person that has a soft spot for kees like Jewel. Jewel and I met her new mom and keesie brother on my way to Wisconsin for Thanksgiving. It was a cold, ugly day, but I left Jewel with them, knowing she would never want for love, warmth or safety ever again. Catherine, thank you for finding a place in your heart and home for my sweet, goofy girl.
Judy Hintzman, Foster mom to Jewel

Jewel on March 15, 2006
Jewel was 10 yrs. old when she came to us after a lifetime of having puppies, puppies and more puppies. As we drove home with her we kept trying out names for her. It was finally decided that under the mats and grime and fear, she was a Jewel. I’m very pleased to say she’s grown into and lives up to her name.

Jewel has been with us for 1.5 years now. The Gidget Fund takes care of her expenses – vaccines, medications, food, etc. The Gidget Fund makes it possible for us to keep a girl like Jewel in a foster home to live out her life in the style she deserves!

Additional foster homes for keesies like Jewel are needed. If you have room in your heart and home for a senior girl or boy, the Gidget Fund can help to make it possible.

Jewel today!
